Tony Wood MBE, former headmaster Liskeard School and Community College.

I have worked for Liskeard for the past 35 years both professionally and voluntarily. I value the town highly. As the first Headmaster of Liskeard School and Community College, I was responsible for uniting the old Grammar and Secondary schools and leading them for nearly 20 years. In that time we established an annual tradition of getting pupils into Oxford and Cambridge and other universities but, at the same time, preparing all young people for an active, socially contributive life in this community. I believe that the school has continued this tradition and offers an excellent secondary education.

All this and much more are causes for justifiable pride by the people of Liskeard and make it a town worth valuing and promoting. I entirely endorse and applaud the LoveLiskeard initiative.

Donna Bryant, Headteacher, Liskeard School and Community College

I am really proud to be Headteacher at Liskeard School and Community College and I love working in this community. The people are the heart of Liskeard. They deserve the very best. They are rightly proud of a superb heritage and a beautiful environment. They care passionately about their town and their children getting a good deal and it’s brilliant that the community is together in this endeavour rising to the Portas challenge.

The Rotary Club of Liskeard and Looe

The Rotary Club of Liskeard and Looe were delighted to hear of the town’s bid to be a ‘Mary Portas Town’. There is a vast amount of local enthusiasm for the development of Liskeard and potential for it to have an increasingly beneficial effect in southeast Cornwall. We have seen this spirit in the charity collections we have organised and the community events in which we have participated, and will support this project in every way that we can.

Volunteer Cornwall & Liskeard Time Bank

“Volunteer Cornwall and Liskeard Time Bank fully supports the towns bid to become one of the governments Portas Pilot towns. Since launching Liskeard Time Bank we have been privileged to witness the community’s commitment to work together and support each other. Their efforts ensure that the more vulnerable members of the community are supported. We have been amazed at the level of skills being offered and the amount of time that Time Bank members are willing to give.

We fully indorse the bid and look forward to working with other organisations to make Liskeard a thriving community.”

“Liskeard has shown it has great potential. The basic foundations of being an attractive, lively and a unique town have got to be in place. It could benefit greatly if it is seen as a centre which first of all serves its varied communities well, and secondly acts as a centre from which to visit the rich Cornish heritage which it is part of. All of the elements are there. So yes, we support the bid for those reasons.”

Highly accomplished local artist, famed for her sensitive, yet humorous portrayal’s of one of the animals you find a lot of in Cornwall! (Although she does horses, dogs and cats, too!) said:

“Liskeard has so much to offer. Lots of independent businesses, local sports teams and a thriving arts community. Great transport links, including the fabulous Looe branch line. It’s only 20 minutes from the sea and 10 minutes from the beautiful Bodmin Moor, and has some excellent green lane walks around the town itself. Hopefully the Portas bid can get all the different groups within the town working together for the good of the town as a whole.”

Sheryl Murray, Conservative MP for south east Cornwall

“Liskeard is an incredibly important market town within South East Cornwall and I am keen to see it do better. Liskeard is where I have based my office and I hope that people who come to my office also use some of the excellent shops available. I certainly do. I would like to thank the organisers of the Liskeard Portas bid for the hard work they have put in and wish them every success in the result.”
