It was truly amazing to see so many turn up last night. I haven’t seen the final tally but the Public Hall was packed, including the gallery! On a Friday night. When there was football on! The Forum broke its previous record turnout to discuss parking, with I estimate nearly four times as many keen to get involved in the town’s Portas Pilot.
It will be a huge job to go through all the ideas and suggestions; there was a worry we were going to run out of paper to record them all!
Thank you to all who spread the word about the meeting, especially shopkeepers and the town businesses who put up posters and got talking to all their customers. To all who helped on the night to provide music, refreshments and interesting stands, often at short notice, the bid team would like to express our heartfelt gratitude. When we’re all working together, this small town is awesome!
The team would also like to say a special thank you to the Forum Chairman, Mike Gregory, for the format of the meeting which opened up the debate to the whole town, especially the stalls that allowed for people to talk and note ideas informally. We wish him a speedy recovery and good health after his operation next week.
And our thanks to Roger Holmes, Vice-Chairman, for such an inspiring opening and closing speech and ably managing such a huge crowd.
Thank you to all those who have sent their congratulations via email, social media and good old fashioned word of mouth for the orderly way proposals for Town Team organisation were discussed. Each proposal was discussed and voted on, and votes were counted where there was any doubt. Several proposals were made from the floor and some of these were carried. I think you agree it was no easy job to give space to different points of view and keep the meeting moving but Rachel Brooks of the bid team handled this with skill.
It’s sad that a few people chose to object to the unprecedented level of participation in a public meeting rather than celebrate it. I’m sure you expect all your Town Councillors to listen to you, the people of Liskeard, as you spoke clearly last night that you want to be involved and have your views heard.
Once we’ve incorporated the decisions reached last night and had further discussions with Cornwall Council we’ll bring to the next Forum the revised governance document and post it here.
We will be getting back to all those who offered to help as speedily as possible, so that the bid plans can move forward with the pace expected by our government funders.
It is important to remember there is great interest across the country in the twelve pilots and ours has attracted attention as one of the few that is community led. Let’s show them what we can do. Roger Holmes and I are representing you on Monday in London and I know I am proud to belong to such a fantastic town. We will share with you the experience of meeting our fellow Pilot Towns on our return.
We love Liskeard and last night Liskeard loved us back!
